If we look at the world today we see clearly that we as the human race are on a path of potential destruction, at least that’s how it seems to be. Our oceans have become our dumping deposits for chemical waste and plastic, our forests are made into soybean farms and luxury furniture, our soil is being poisoned with heavy chemicals. Things don’t look that rosy anymore, but beware, there are good things coming our way.
During my 15 months of traveling, I’ve become very aware of what is happening to us and our precious blue jewel we call earth. For a long time, I carried the thought that we have to save the earth, that we have to change the world out there but I came to the realization that this is not what has to be done, at least not now.
We have to care for our earth, respect and honor it, for it gives and provides for all of us, but I still think that the main thing for us to do is not to change the world out there, it’s we as the human race who are in need for a change. All those things that are happening in the world – wars, deforestation, poisoning of soil and oceans and human suffering in general – every single one of those problems we are facing as a species are the symptoms of one disease and this disease is that we have lost touch with ourselves, the natural world around us and most of all our innermost spirit.
We have forgotten who we are. Our way of seeing has been blurred with ignorance and judgment, our hearts are poisoned with hate, greed, and jealousy, our minds have have become the source of the majority of our problems, but even now that our world is becoming crazier than ever I know that this isn’t our nature.
At the crossroads of the future
The human race holds the greatest capacity to advance in all areas that we developed, for better or for worse. What matters is, is it in service and to the benefit of the whole or just for the enrichment of a few, where we put our effort will play a major role for all of us, no matter how small of an impact we make.
So if we look at the world as more of a mirror and a teacher rather than something that needs to be saved, which really is not what is asked of us, we can see and recognize very clearly, what is needed. No matter what happens, no matter what measurements of destruction our onslaught of the natural world will reach, we can’t destroy the earth. Earth has been around for so long, she survived all kinds of threats send by the universe, that even our most powerful bombs are nothing more than a scratch for her.
The primordial movement of the world is always towards life and bringing forth new life. Earth is constantly in the process of bursting forth with new life, it has been this way since the beginning. Mother Earth is the artist that has brought forth life on this planet and here reservoir of paint and paper hasn’t run out yet.
Even if we would destroy life on earth, we would never be able to destroy the world’s drive to create more of it. We don’t need to save the world, we need to get our act together and see that we are the threat and the blessing for the world at the same time, what we will be in the end, is a choice we have to make by ourselves for ourselves and each other, then we have a chance to continue the legacy of the human race.
I think Lao-Tzu said it the best way:
“If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.”
Destroy to rebuild
So, yes, personally I think the world as we knew it is coming to an end, but only to let a new one be born out of the ashes of the old one and this new world is born in you as well. It might look like the earth is being destroyed, but just as the birth of a child is a process that involves pain and suffering, the birth of a new civilization does as well, but only if we cling to the old ways. If we can bring up the courage to embrace the new, we will be held up high by the whole of Life and we can become an active and integral part of co-creating a new way of living on earth.
This is what I want for you. Have courage and be brave and listen to these whispers of your heart, it will guide you to where you have to be. Don’t waste time trying to change others or the world, pay attention to your own path. If you do that, you do the greatest service to humanity, you will grow so much in this process, you will discover gifts you can share with the world that will serve your fellow humans, you will discover a great sense of wonder for life and an immense trust into powers, unknown to those who never make this step.
Go out there and never ever be afraid. Life doesn’t exist for us to be fearful, it exist so we can be joyful.
